🚀Express Entry
FSW, CEC, FST, CRS calculator, draws & ITAs
What is the minimum CRS score for Express Entry?
There is no fixed minimum. CRS cutoffs vary by draw category and have ranged from the high 400s in general draws to as low as the 300s in some category-based draws (e.g., French-language proficiency). Check the latest draw results for current cutoffs.
How long does Express Entry take?
After receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA), applicants have 60 days to submit a complete electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR). IRCC's published service standard for processing eAPRs is six months from submission, though actual times vary.
Can I apply to Express Entry without a job offer?
Yes. A valid job offer is not required for any of the three Express Entry programs. A qualifying offer can add CRS points (50 or 200 depending on the position), but most invited candidates do not have a Canadian job offer.

🍁Provincial Nominee Programs
All 11 PNPs — Ontario, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, more
What is the difference between a base PNP and an enhanced PNP?
Enhanced PNP nominations are tied to the federal Express Entry system and add 600 CRS points to a candidate's profile, virtually guaranteeing an ITA. Base PNP nominations are processed outside Express Entry and lead directly to permanent residence; processing times can be longer.
Which PNP is easiest to qualify for?
There is no universally 'easiest' PNP — eligibility depends on your occupation, education, work experience, language, and ties to a province. Saskatchewan's Occupations In-Demand and Manitoba's MPNP are sometimes cited as accessible for newcomers without prior Canadian connections, but priorities change frequently.

🎓Study Permit
DLI list, PAL, GIC, PGWP, extensions & refusals
How much money do I need for a Canadian study permit?
As of 2024, IRCC requires single applicants to show approximately CAD $20,635 in living expenses on top of first-year tuition (Quebec has different thresholds). Amounts increase for accompanying family members. Verify the current figure on canada.ca before applying.
Can I work while on a study permit?
Most full-time students at a DLI may work off-campus during their studies; the permitted hours during academic sessions changed in late 2024. Co-op programs require a separate co-op work permit. Check IRCC's current off-campus work rules before working.

💼Work Permit
LMIA, IMP codes, GTS, IEC, PGWP, BOWP
What is the difference between LMIA-based and LMIA-exempt work permits?
LMIA-based permits require an employer to first prove no Canadian worker is available; this is a Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) requirement. LMIA-exempt permits are issued under the International Mobility Program (IMP) for situations covered by trade agreements, reciprocal benefit, or significant economic/cultural benefit.
Who is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?
PGWP eligibility now depends on the type of credential, the field of study (some bachelor's-level programs require linked-occupation eligibility), and DLI accreditation. Verify the current PGWP-eligible field-of-study list on canada.ca before applying.

Spousal, PGP, Super Visa, dependent children
How long does spousal sponsorship take in Canada?
IRCC publishes a service standard of approximately 12 months for spousal sponsorship applications, but actual processing times vary by visa office and case complexity. Inland and outland applications can have different timelines. Check IRCC's processing times tool for the current figure for your visa office.
Is the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) open?
PGP intake is announced periodically and has been paused or run via lottery in recent years. The Super Visa — a multiple-entry visa valid up to 10 years for parents and grandparents — has remained available regardless of PGP status.

Application, test, ceremony, dual citizenship
How long do I have to live in Canada to apply for citizenship?
Adult permanent residents must be physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5 years immediately before the application date. Days as a temporary resident before becoming a PR can count as half-days, up to 365 days.
Do I have to renounce my original citizenship to become Canadian?
Canada permits dual (or multiple) citizenship. However, your country of origin may not — some countries automatically revoke citizenship when you naturalize elsewhere. Check the rules of your country of origin separately.

✈️Visitor Visa & eTA
Single & multiple entry, super visa, transit, by source country
Do I need a visitor visa or an eTA to visit Canada?
It depends on your passport. Visa-required nationals need a TRV; visa-exempt travellers flying to Canada need an eTA (US citizens are exempt from both). Check IRCC's official visitor visa tool to determine which document applies to your nationality.
Can I extend my visitor stay in Canada?
Yes — apply for a Visitor Record at least 30 days before your status expires. A Visitor Record extends temporary resident status inside Canada but is not a re-entry document.

⏱️Processing Times
Live IRCC processing times by program & source country
Why is my application taking longer than the posted processing time?
Posted times reflect the 80th percentile of recently finalized applications, meaning roughly 20% take longer. Common causes include security or background-check delays, incomplete documentation, and visa-office workload. Order GCMS notes after the posted time has elapsed to see your case status.
What are GCMS notes and how do I get them?
GCMS (Global Case Management System) notes are IRCC's internal record of your file. Canadian citizens and permanent residents can request them through Access to Information; foreign nationals typically use a Canadian citizen or PR as a representative. Processing usually takes 30 days.

⚖️Appeals & Judicial Review
Refusals, IAD, Federal Court JR, reconsideration, misrepresentation
Can I appeal a refused study permit or work permit?
There is no formal appeal for most temporary resident decisions. Options are (1) request reconsideration, (2) reapply with a stronger application, or (3) seek Federal Court judicial review of the decision. JR is procedural — it does not re-decide the case but can quash the refusal and send it back.
What is a procedural fairness letter?
A procedural fairness letter (PFL) is a notice that IRCC has concerns that may lead to refusal — for example, doubts about a marriage's genuineness or suspected misrepresentation. You usually have 7–30 days to respond with evidence rebutting the concern.

🏠After Landing
SIN, health card, driver's licence, banking, taxes
What's the first thing I should do after landing in Canada?
Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) immediately — many providers won't open accounts without one. Then apply for your provincial health card (note: some provinces have a 3-month wait for new PRs to be eligible). After that, open a bank account and register at a settlement service agency.
Can I exchange my foreign driver's licence for a Canadian one?
Several countries have reciprocal exchange agreements with one or more Canadian provinces (e.g., UK, Japan, Korea, Germany, Australia, parts of the US). Outside those, you typically need to pass written and road tests. Each province has its own rules.

🛟Refugee & Humanitarian
In-Canada claims, PRRA, H&C, special measures
What is the Safe Third Country Agreement?
The Safe Third Country Agreement requires refugee claimants who pass through one of Canada or the US to claim in the country where they first arrived. Several exceptions exist — family in Canada, unaccompanied minors, document holders, and public-interest cases. The 2023 expansion extended STCA to the entire land border.
What is an H&C application?
Humanitarian and Compassionate applications let people apply for permanent residence on grounds outside the standard categories — typically establishment in Canada, best interests of children, and hardship if removed. H&C is discretionary and approval rates are low; specific evidence is essential.
