Canada placed seventh in the 2026 Best Countries rankings released by U.S. News & World Report, maintaining its position among the world's top nations for quality of life, economic opportunity, and social purpose. The annual survey, conducted in partnership with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and global marketing firm WPP, evaluated 89 countries across 73 attributes.
This marks a slight decline from Canada's sixth-place finish in 2025, though the country continues to outperform most developed nations in categories that directly influence immigration decisions. Canada previously held the top spot in 2021, making the current ranking part of a gradual shift in global perceptions of the country's competitive advantages.
The rankings assessed countries based on ten broad categories: agility, cultural influence, entrepreneurship, heritage, movers (countries seen as unique or distinctive), open for business, power, quality of life, social purpose, and adventure. Canada scored particularly well in quality of life and social purpose — two metrics that weigh heavily for prospective immigrants evaluating where to settle. The methodology surveyed more than 17,000 people across four regions, including business leaders, informed elites, and general citizens, to capture diverse perspectives on national strengths.
"Canada's consistent performance in these rankings reflects its reputation as a welcoming destination with strong institutions and economic stability," the report notes.
