Colombo visa application centre: The Sri Lanka process

Sri Lankan citizens planning to move to Canada for study, work, or permanent residency have to go through a mix of online and offline steps. While you will submit almost all of your application documents digitally through the Canadian government's online portal, you cannot avoid the physical step of giving your biometrics and handing over your passport. In Sri Lanka, this physical processing is handled by the Colombo Visa Application Centre (VAC), which is run by a commercial partner called VFS Global.

Getting through this local step without a hitch keeps your application on track. If you make a mistake here, you risk delays that can push your start date back by months. Knowing how the Colombo VAC operates, how it fits into the broader Canadian immigration system, and what to expect on the day of your appointment will help you navigate the process without unnecessary stress.

How the Colombo visa application centre fits into the system

The Colombo Visa Application Centre is not a Canadian embassy or consulate. It is run by VFS Global, a private outsourcing company contracted by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to handle administrative tasks.

It is completely normal to feel a bit nervous when visiting the centre, but keep in mind that the staff working there have zero say in whether your visa is approved or denied. They do not review your eligibility, conduct interviews, or make decisions on your file. Their job is strictly administrative. They are there to:

  • Check your passport and identity documents when you walk in.
  • Take your digital photo and scan your fingerprints.
  • Send your physical passport securely to the Canadian visa office.
  • Hand back your passport and decision documents once they return.

Whether you are applying for a study permit to head to a Canadian university, a work permit for a new job, or permanent residency through Express Entry, you will have to coordinate with this office to complete your biometrics.

Booking your biometrics appointment in Colombo

You cannot just show up at the Colombo VAC and expect to give your biometrics. The centre operates strictly by appointment, and you can only book a slot after you have completed the initial steps of your online application.

First, you must complete and submit your visa or permit application through the IRCC portal. When you pay your application fees online, make sure you include the biometrics fee (which is currently 85 CAD for an individual). Once this payment is processed, IRCC will issue a document called a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL). This letter usually appears in your online account within 24 to 48 hours, though it can sometimes take a few days if the system is lagging.

Once you have downloaded and saved your BIL, you can book your appointment. To book, go to the VFS Global Sri Lanka portal and register for an account. Once logged in, select
