Visa-free countries for Canadian passport holders (2026): where you can travel without a visa

The Canadian passport is one of the most powerful travel documents in the world. In the 2026 Henley Passport Index, Canada ranks 7th, giving its citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to roughly 182 destinations — ahead of the United States, which sits 10th.

But "visa-free" can mean a few different things, and even a strong passport does not remove every requirement. Here is what Canadian travellers actually need to know.

The three kinds of "visa-free" travel

  1. Fully visa-free — you simply arrive with a valid passport and are admitted for a set number of days. This covers most of Europe, the UK, much of the Americas and many others.
  2. Visa on arrival — you get the visa at the airport or border when you land, usually for a fee.
  3. eTA or eVisa — technically "visa-free" in that you don't visit an embassy, but you must apply online in advance (for example, Australia's ETA/eVisitor or many countries' eVisas).

Passport-strength rankings usually count the first two categories together, which is how Canada reaches around 182 destinations.

Where Canadians can travel visa-free

Without listing all 180-plus, the highlights for Canadian passport holders in 2026 include:

  • Europe: the entire Schengen Area (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and more) for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, plus the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Balkans.
  • The Americas: Mexico, most of Central and South America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and others) and much of the Caribbean.
  • Asia-Pacific: Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and — new for 2026 — mainland China, which opened visa-free entry to Canadians for stays of up to 30 days on 17 February 2026.
  • Africa and the Middle East: a range of destinations including Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa (visa-free short stays) and the United Arab Emirates.

The United States deserves a special note: Canadian citizens generally do not need a U.S. visa or an ESTA for tourist or business visits — a valid passport is normally enough — though stays are still time-limited and subject to inspection at the border.

Where you still need to arrange something first

A top-tier passport doesn't mean "go anywhere." Canadians still need to apply in advance for places such as:

  • Australia — a free ETA / eVisitor applied for online;
  • India, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and others — an eVisa;
  • China beyond the 30-day visa-free window, and a number of countries in Africa and Central Asia — a full visa.

Three rules before every trip

  1. Check the destination's official government or embassy website — visa rules change often, and rankings are a snapshot, not a guarantee.
  2. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates; many countries require it.
  3. Confirm the permitted length of stay — visa-free rarely means unlimited.
