Express Entry vs Family Sponsorship for PR
These are two very different roads to PR. Express Entry is skills-based and open to anyone who qualifies; family sponsorship requires a close relative who is a Canadian citizen or PR willing to sponsor you. Some applicants are eligible for both.
| Express Entry | Family Sponsorship | |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | Skills, age, education, language (CRS) | A qualifying family relationship |
| Need a relative in Canada | No | Yes — a citizen/PR sponsor |
| Who can sponsor/apply | The applicant themselves | Spouse, partner, child, parent, grandparent |
| Language/education tests | Yes — central to the score | Generally no |
| Typical timeline | ~6 months after ITA | ~12 months (spousal service standard) |
| Income requirement | Settlement funds (unless exempt) | Sponsor income (LICO) for some categories |
| Best for | Skilled workers without a Canadian sponsor | Those with a close Canadian family member |
Which should you choose?
If you have a spouse, partner, or close family member in Canada willing to sponsor you, family sponsorship is often the most reliable route. If not, or if you're a strong skilled candidate, Express Entry is the way in — and the two aren't mutually exclusive.
