Visitor Visa vs Super Visa for parents & grandparents
Both let family visit Canada, but the Super Visa is purpose-built for parents and grandparents of citizens and PRs: it allows much longer stays per entry and is valid for up to 10 years, in exchange for stricter income and medical-insurance requirements.
| Visitor Visa | Super Visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | Any visa-required visitor | Parents & grandparents of citizens/PRs |
| Stay per entry | Usually up to 6 months | Up to 5 years per entry |
| Validity | Up to 10 years (multiple entry) | Up to 10 years (multiple entry) |
| Medical insurance | Not mandatory | Mandatory — ≥1 year of Canadian medical coverage |
| Income test on host | No formal LICO test | Yes — host must meet the LICO minimum |
| Invitation letter | Recommended | Required from the child/grandchild |
| Typical processing | ~4–30 weeks (varies widely) | ~6–30 weeks |
| Best for | Short or general visits | Long, repeated visits by parents/grandparents |
Which should you choose?
If the visitor is a parent or grandparent who wants long stays, the Super Visa is almost always better despite the insurance and income rules. For shorter or one-off visits, or visitors who aren't parents/grandparents, a standard visitor visa is simpler.
