Here's where Canada's passport stands in latest global ranking
Canada's passport has been ranked among the top 10 most powerful passports globally, according to the latest Henley Passport Index. The index, which has been published by Henley & Partners since 2006, ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access visa-free. Canada's passport currently ranks seventh, providing visa-free access to 183 destinations. This ranking has remained steady for the third year in a row.
The Henley Passport Index has been tracking changes in global mobility over the past two decades, noting a significant increase in the average number of destinations accessible to passport holders. In 2006, the average passport could access 58 countries, compared to 108 today. This shift reflects the expansion of global mobility, despite the current high number of state-based conflicts worldwide.
The index covers data from 199 different passports and 227 travel destinations, using information from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Canada shares its seventh-place ranking with several countries, including Australia, Czechia, and New Zealand. The top-ranked passports belong to Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates.
According to the report, Canada's passport ranking has fluctuated over the years, reaching its highest point in 2014 as the second most powerful passport globally. The current ranking places Canada ahead of the United States, which ranks tenth.
For Canadians planning to travel abroad, it is essential to research the specific visa requirements for their destination. While Canada's passport provides visa-free access to many countries, there are still several nations that require a visa, including India, Russia, and China, although China has introduced a temporary visa-free policy for Canadian passport holders until December 31, 2026.
