Processing times ease for temporary residence applicants

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada updated its processing time estimates for temporary residence applications on June 3, showing modest improvements across most categories. Work permit processing from India and the United States dropped by one week, while super visa applications from the U.S. saw the largest improvement at 10 days faster, as reported by CIC News.

The June 3 update marks the first processing time revision since May 26. While most categories held steady or improved, study permit applications from India increased by one week, and visitor visa processing from within Canada rose by three days. The changes reflect IRCC's ongoing efforts to manage application volumes against processing capacity, with wait times for temporary residence applications varying significantly by country of submission.

Work permit processing times either decreased or remained unchanged across all featured countries. Applications submitted from within Canada currently take 195 days, down from 201 days on May 26. India-based work permit applications now process in nine weeks, down from 10, while U.S. submissions dropped from five weeks to four. Pakistan, Nigeria, and the Philippines saw no change, holding at six weeks, 16 weeks, and eight weeks respectively. IRCC's service standard for work permits remains 120 days for in-Canada submissions and 60 days for applications from outside Canada.

"Processing times are estimates only, and do not guarantee the exact time an application will be finalized," the department notes in its guidance.

Study permit wait times remained stable except for India, where processing increased from four weeks to five. In-Canada study permit applications continue to take six weeks, while Pakistan holds at seven weeks, Nigeria at six, the United States at five, and the Philippines at four. Super visa processing improved for four of the five countries tracked: India dropped from 116 days to 112, Pakistan from 74 to 70, Nigeria from 36 to 35, and the United States from 106 to 96. Only the Philippines remained unchanged at 33 days. Visitor visa processing from within Canada increased from 25 days to 28, while Pakistan-based applications improved slightly from 49 days to 47.

The changes affect work permit holders renewing from within Canada, international students applying from India, parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents seeking super visas, and visitor visa applicants submitting from inside Canada. U.S.-based applicants for both work permits and super visas saw the most significant improvements in this update cycle.

Applicants should check the official IRCC processing times tool for their specific country and application type before submitting. IRCC provides both historical processing estimates, which show how long 80% of past applications took, and forward-looking estimates based on current inventories. Actual processing times vary depending on application completeness, complexity, and whether IRCC requests additional documents. Applicants can monitor their status through their IRCC online account after submission.
