Canada 'repeats' its 'Citizenship warning' on FIFA World Cup 2026, says:…
This marks the second time IRCC has issued the caution, following an earlier advisory when World Cup preparations began. The department's renewed focus reflects concern that some ticket holders may assume event credentials substitute for standard visitor documentation, a misconception that could lead to denied boarding or refusal at the border.
The advisory specifies that all foreign nationals must determine their visa requirements before travel. Visitors from visa-required countries need a valid temporary resident visa, while those from visa-exempt nations must hold an approved electronic travel authorization. Passport validity requirements also apply — travel documents must remain valid for the duration of the intended stay in Canada. The statement clarifies that possessing a match ticket does not exempt anyone from these conditions, nor does it guarantee entry if other admissibility criteria are not met.
"You are responsible for ensuring you meet all entry requirements," the advisory states, placing accountability squarely on travelers rather than event organizers or ticketing platforms.
The warning particularly affects visitors from countries requiring visas to enter Canada, including major football markets such as India, China, Nigeria, and much of Latin America and Southeast Asia. Fans from the United States and most European Union member states fall under the eTA requirement instead. Both processes require advance application — visa processing times currently range from several weeks to months depending on the applicant's country of residence, while eTAs typically process within minutes but can take days if additional review is needed.
Travelers planning to attend World Cup matches should verify their status using the IRCC online tool at canada.ca and apply for the appropriate authorization immediately if they have not already done so. Those with existing visas or eTAs should confirm the documents remain valid through their planned departure date from Canada. Applicants refused entry due to incomplete documentation will not receive refunds for match tickets or related travel expenses, making advance preparation essential.
