LGBTQ Americans are getting expedited Canadian citizenship certificates

Canada's citizenship department is expediting proof of citizenship certificates for LGBTQ Americans, with some applicants receiving documents in as little as two weeks. The fast-tracking applies to Americans with Canadian ancestry who qualify for urgent processing based on sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or membership in particular groups, as reported by CIC News.
Standard processing times for American applicants currently run about a year. The surge in applications follows Canada's removal of the first-generation limit to inheriting citizenship for anyone born before December 15, 2025 — a change that granted millions of Americans with Canadian ancestry the right to citizenship, including those whose families have lived entirely in the United States for four or more generations. This spring, processing times increased dramatically as thousands of Americans applied, including many LGBTQ Americans concerned for their safety in the current U.S. political environment.
According to the Canadian government's help centre, applicants can request urgent processing "to help avoid situations of harm or hardship" due to sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or membership in particular groups. Urgent processing is also available when applicants need immediate access to social benefits such as healthcare, or to legal status in Canada for employment or education. To apply, an applicant must include a letter of explanation for the urgent processing request along with supporting documents, in addition to their complete proof of citizenship application. If the reviewing officer judges the applicant qualifies, the citizenship department will expedite the request, though no specific processing time is guaranteed.
"Applicants can apply for urgent processing to help avoid situations of harm or hardship," the help centre states.
The expedited processing affects Americans born outside Canada who inherited citizenship through a Canadian ancestor. Trans Americans identifying themselves across the web have reported receiving certificates in as little as two weeks. Proof of citizenship certificates are issued to individuals born outside Canada who have inherited citizenship, including those born in the United States who now legally qualify as U.S.-Canadian dual citizens.
Applications must be submitted on paper by mail or courier, including completed application forms and copies of official documents proving continuous descent from a Canadian ancestor — such as a series of birth certificates and marriage certificates. Applications must adhere to exacting standards; minor errors like non-compliant photos, missing proof of payment, or blank fields can result in rejection without processing. Applicants can select one of three genders on the certificate: F (female), M (male), or X (another gender). Those selecting a different gender than appears on their birth certificate must also submit a Request for a Change of Sex or Gender Identifier form (IRM 0002), but no medical records or other documentation are required. Once a citizen by descent receives their certificate, they can apply for a Canadian passport, typically processed within 10 to 20 business days.
